This collection is a beautiful little thing, very delicate in its handling of tone, flirting with whimsy but never quite allowing it to tip over into anything twee — tempering its own sense of innocence and playfulness with a streak of sobriety — and the turning-over of philosophical ideas is done with uncommon charm. Uncommon, that is, in the sense that philosophy and charm don't usually (or naturally) pair up, and still less when there are cats in the mix. But the childlikeness of the set-up turns out to be a lovely, rather gentle inroads into substantive ideas and considerations — or (for the biped reader) defamiliarisations and re-considerations of habits, behaviours, and social artifices that are taken for granted as part of the daily grind. Certainly I am now newly conscious of the idiocy that must be on my face when I speak to my cat!
